Creating New Experience for Effective English Language Learning and Teaching

Since 2012, students’ performance in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) has been the general entry point for admission to tertiary education or a basic qualification of the job market. With a strong orientation on exam-based learning and teaching under formal education, English Language is considered by many students, especially those from a disadvantaged background, as a big hurdle among the subjects to be assessed in HKDSE, which is also a popular view shared by teachers who teach underachieving students.

To rejuvenate the English Language learning and teaching experience of our students and teachers, The D. H. Chen Foundation (“the Foundation”) and The Hong Kong Policy Research Institute (“HKPRI”) have joined hands in Curriculum Plus Prequel (“ the CPP”), a one-year pilot program that helps students who are underachieved in English learning to attain Level 3 in English Language under HKDSE through the specially designed curriculum that involves 70 hours of blended learning.

Targeted to serve 200 to 300 students, CPP will organize regular classes in small groups for students after school, using course materials incorporating real-life and workplace elements. Teacher training and development is another focus area. English teachers from the partner schools will be invited to the workshops organized by CPP, a key to drive a lasting effect in English Language teaching and learning in the local curriculum.

The Foundation and HKPRI have the vision to initiate changes for Hong Kong’s future education landscape. The CPP could be the first step of adopting more effective course designs and learning approaches in the local scene to cater for the needs of learners.
