Promoting mindfulness in healthcare sector

Hong Kong’s world-class public healthcare system is supported by an excellent team of very dedicated health professionals. However, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and supporting staff may encounter challenges in that may affect their own physical and emotional wellbeing. In order for them to cultivate compassion for those served by them, their individual wellbeing is an important prerequisite.

The Foundation collaborates with the Centre on Behavioral Health of The University of Hong Kong (“CBH”) to provide the “Mindfulness for Resilience Building in Clinical and Non-clinical Staff Program” (“the Program”) at a newly established local public hospital. The Program runs from June 2018 to July 2020, with the aim to generate positive impact to the participants and contribute to the caring culture of the hospital.

Through delivering a series of mindfulness training for hospital staff to participate on a voluntary basis, it is hoped that awareness of mindfulness practice could be established among healthcare professionals and other staff, enabling them to maintain physical and emotional wellbeing. Thematic booster sessions with specific healthcare topics will be arranged to support the continuity of the practice. A mix of quantitative and qualitative evaluation will be conducted to analyze the impact of the Program. Results will also be used for fine-tuning of the Program for possible expansion to other hospitals in Hong Kong.

With the Foundation’s support, it is hoped that the holistic wellbeing of those who serve in the healthcare sector will be improved, thus cultivating a sense of compassion among service providers and receivers. Furthermore, the Foundation also looks forward to establishing a model of promoting mindfulness practice in other hospitals in the long run.
