Supporting Parents and Teens in Life and Career Exploration

In the face of an evolving educational and career landscape, parents encounter significant challenges in supporting their teenage children’s life and career exploration. Recent studies indicate that many parents feel unprepared to provide essential guidance on educational pathways and career options to their children. They often struggle to connect with their teenagers, and to access up-to-date information on education and employment opportunities, which, in turn, limits their ability to effectively support their children’s aspirations.

The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) Ho Yuk Ching Educational Psychology Service Centre recognizes the importance of parental involvement in teenagers’ life exploration journey. In response, they have developed「生涯有共識」家長教育計劃 – a 15-month life exploration training program for parents designed to enhance their communication and parenting methods. The Program equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to guide their children’s life exploration, thereby fostering stronger parent-teen connections.

The D. H. Chen Foundation and TWGHs share a common vision of unleashing teenagers’ potential. Through supporting this Program, the Foundation helps further create a positive ripple effect within the parent community, building their confidence and skills to guide their teenagers in exploring their life paths.

  • Parents actively participating in a program session and sharing their parenting journeys

Employing the Satir Model and Strengths-Based Model to facilitate parents’ self-reflection, the Program guides participants to reflect on their own growth experiences, understand different communication approaches, and explore how their family of origin influence their parenting styles. By gaining insight into themselves, parents can better understand their teenagers’ inner needs. Meanwhile, parents are also encouraged to identify, appreciate, and nurture their teenagers’ interests and strengths, enabling them to support their children in their exploration journeys more effectively.

The outcomes and impact of the Program will be rigorously evaluated in collaboration with Hong Kong Baptist University. This partnership will help develop an evidence-based, in-depth parent-education curriculum focused on teenagers’ life exploration. By sharing the results and experiences with schools and the broader community, the Program seeks to advocate for the critical importance of parent-focused initiatives in guiding teenagers’ life exploration and career development. Meanwhile, through strengthening parent-teenager connections, teenagers can navigate their life journeys with stronger familial support, ultimately contributing to a more compassionate society.
