Pioneering Translational Research in Microbiome Medicine for Children's Health

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and eczema are prevalent conditions that now affect over 85 million children worldwide these days. Their impact on the quality of life of both these children and their families is profound yet often underestimated. Encouragingly, emerging research has revealed that the gut microbiota – communities of beneficial and harmful bacteria – play a pivotal role in the earlier diagnosis a various conditions, including eczema and ASD. By analysing individual microbial profiles, researchers can identify novel diagnostic biomarkers for early detection and develop personalised microbial replacement therapies to prevent or alleviate these conditions.

In light of these developments, The D. H. Chen Foundation partnered with the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2021 to establish HATCH – Hub of Advanced Technology for Child Health. This pioneering initiative seeks to generate patent-protected microbiome innovations that can be translated into practical applications, enhancing early diagnosis and improving treatment outcomes for children with ASD and eczema.

During its first phase, HATCH built a robust database of over 2,500 children and identified groundbreaking gut microbiome biomarkers that serve as non-invasive diagnostic tools for ASD. In recognition of its potential to transform care for life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating conditions, this work was granted the Breakthrough Device Designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2024.

Beyond research, HATCH integrates community engagement and talent development as its mission’s core pillars, creating a nurturing environment where young people and families learn together. Leveraging the Foundation’s network, the programme has partnered with nonprofits such as The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, Heep Hong Society, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong, and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals to bridge scientific knowledge with real community needs.

At the same time, the programme provides hands‑on training and multidisciplinary guidance from experts to secondary school and university students, empowering them to explore microbiome science and health advocacy. To date, HATCH has trained over 35 young talents and reached more than 800 parents through its educational initiatives.

  • HATCH hosting community events for ASD families — sharing self-care strategies with parents and creating sensory-friendly theatre experiences for children

  • HATCH empowering young individuals to explore careers in microbiota research and medical entrepreneurship through immersive learning and the creation of real-world awareness materials

  • CATCHER, the newly formed alumni group, empowering young minds from all walks of life through curiosity and collaboration in science

Building on such success, HATCH’s second phase launched in 2025 focuses on refining the precision of its non-invasive diagnostic tools for ASD. The team validates prototype biomarkers in younger children under the age of four, leveraging machine learning to establish the device as both clinically accessible and commercially viable.

On the other hand, HATCH continues to prioritise talent development and community outreach. A newly-formed alumni network, CATCHER, will spearhead future initiatives, inspiring the next generation of curious minds in science and beyond.

With cutting-edge advancements in microbial diagnostics and therapies, the Foundation envisions HATCH as a beacon of hope – bringing transformative health solutions to children and families through research, education, and community engagement.
